If you want to create an original character for role playing that console commands are a must. Or have Robb become a craven who only leads from the rear. If I want Dany to become a lunatic as she tries to take the throne I can do that easily. Or better yet, to change your character as the game goes on. You get some choice, but it's not like the game lets you choose the exact traits you want in your character.
It just helps to develop the character you want to play as.
